In Fall 2013, Ms. Fasteen began her third year as a graduate student in the Math Education Ph.D. program at Portland State University, Portland, OR. Portland State has a demanding academic program with a focus on undergraduate mathematics education research. She is a Graduate Research Assistant, working with a large professional development research project for elementary school teachers. Ms. Fasteen's research interests involve the development of pre-service elementary teachers, particularly in whole number and operations. She is interested in guided reinvention and helping prepare pre-service teachers to support the mathematical creations and inventions of children, and is currently investigating the role of alternate bases in pre-service teacher content courses.
