The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Northern Arizona University (NAU) seeks a dynamic and innovative scholar for a tenure-track assistant professor position in mathematics education beginning August 21, 2023. The successful applicant will further NAU's commitment to strategically increase its capacity to provide local and national leadership in mathematics education through innovative undergraduate and graduate programs, professional development, and scholarship.

 

Job Description

 

Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate mathematics and mathematics education courses and graduate mathematics education courses in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, as well as teaching courses in the NAUTeach Program (the undergraduate joint secondary mathematics and science education program). Responsibilities also include scholarly activities in mathematics education; supervision of undergraduate students in practicum courses; ability to contribute to program development and expansion; graduate student advising; and faculty service. NAU affirms the importance and critical need for diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) in higher education and we seek to hire an individual with a record of, or commitment to, engagement with DEIJ in their professional endeavors.

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

• Earned doctoral degree in mathematics education or in a closely related field expected by August 21, 2023.

• At least one year of full-time teaching experience in teaching mathematics at the middle or secondary school level.

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

Preference will be given to candidates with:

 

• Substantial evidence of high-quality teaching.

• Demonstrated interest in contributing to the department's mathematics education program at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

• Demonstrated interest in teaching in a variety of modalities, such as in-person, hybrid, and online.

• Three or more years of teaching experience in teaching mathematics at the middle or secondary school level.

• Experience in teaching and developing pedagogical courses for combined mathematics and science preservice teachers.

• Record of engagement with or commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) in higher education.

• Demonstrated commitment to working with pre-service and in-service teachers.

• Demonstrated potential for independent research leading to peer reviewed publications and the securing of external research funding.

• Strong mathematics content preparation.

 

General Information

 

The http://www.math.nau.eduhas 41 permanent faculty and offers Bachelors' degrees in mathematics, secondary education in mathematics, and data science; Masters' degrees in mathematics, mathematics education, and statistics; and a graduate certificate in applied statistics.

 

Northern Arizona University has a student population of 29,569, including approximately 21,000 on its main campus in Flagstaff and the remainder at more than 20 locations statewide and online.

Salary

 

$65,000 to $70,000 per academic year depending on experience and qualifications.

 

Benefits

 

This is a Faculty (FAC) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); sick leave accruals and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. Faculty are hired on a contract basis, renewable according to terms of the http://nau.edu/Provost/Resources-Policies/. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment. If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of employment. The long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of the pay period following 90 days of employment.
