Special features or areas of interest that would be of interest to potential doctoral students:

The University of Maryland was part of the Mid-Atlantic Center for Mathematics Teaching and Learning (MAC-MTL) (http://www.education.umd.edu/mac-mtl), in partnership with Penn State and the University of Delaware, and funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). A series of four doctoral courses in mathematics education (learning, teaching, curriculum, professional-development/leadership) provide mathematics education specific grounding in research, theory and practice. Additionally, there are one credit seminars, specialized mathematics courses for graduate students in mathematics education, and assistantships that are an important part of the experience. Students are supported with Fey-Graeber fellowships. University of Maryland faculty interests include the learning of algebra and statistics; curriculum development; student thinking; professional development, school reform and equity. The greater Washington-Baltimore area offers ethnic diversity, rich cultural venues, employment opportunities for spouses/partners, contacts in government and professional agencies. Seashore and mountains within two hours.
