President's Message

Supporting Mathematics Teacher Educators through an Ever-Changing Teacher Education Landscape

At the start of another academic year throughout PK-12 schools and higher education settings, teachers and teacher educators remain resolute in continuing the deep commitment towards engaging, empowering and elevating their students in various educational contexts. As such, the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE) continues to lead and strategically support mathematics teacher educators to meet the needs of teachers, educational leaders, schools and communities. With more than 1000 members, the AMTE community is made up of professors, teacher leaders, school-based and district supervisors, field experience mentors and coordinators, and policymakers.

As discussed in the Summer 2025 AMTE Connections, our organization is fueled by the brilliance, dedication and commitment of expert teacher educators to create more comprehensive and inclusive approaches to mathematics teacher education. Note that oftentimes, we need to take an intersectional and simultaneously comprehensive approach to the term mathematics teacher educators (MTEs) as many engage students and prospective teachers in statistics education, STEM education, data science education, and related fields. In order to make sense and address the ever-changing landscape of education and subsequently teacher education, what are some ways/roles to advocate and provide leadership in authentic and critical ways?

As we prepare to gather, disseminate teaching and research efforts, and also importantly recharge as a community at our 30th Annual Conference in Portland, OR during February 5-7, 2026; here are just a few ways in which AMTE continues to connect and support our membership each year in advocating, leading, and showcasing impactful work:

  • Publications (MTE Journal, Professional Book Series, Connections Newsletter, Contemporary Issues in Technology and Teacher Education, Monographs, Joint Position Statements, Standards for Preparing Teachers of Mathematics)
  • Professional Learning (Annual Conference, Tech Talks, Virtual Institutes)
  • Webinars (Timely topics ranging from Artificial Intelligence, Recruitment, Position Statements, Research Frameworks, Statistics & Data Science)
  • Awards & Scholarships (Elementary Math Specialist Scholarships, Dissertation Awards, Mathematics Teacher Educator Outstanding Reviewer Award, Susan Gay Graduate Student Conference Travel Scholarship, Conference Registration & Membership Scholarship, Early Career Award, Excellence in Scholarship Award, Judith E. Jacobs Lecture)

Over the course of the next few weeks/months and leading into the annual conference, please be on the look out for:

  • Collective Action Supporting Teachers and Mathematics Teacher Educators (CAST-MTE) Task Force - including next steps and action items
  • Webinars to address challenges related to funding termination and research collaborations
  • Opportunities for town hall meetings to suggest new pathways to support MTEs in order to respond and advocate for the needs of our communities
  • Strategic partnerships and sponsorships to support our academic and professional goals
  • Ways to bring together communities of scholars in mathematics, statistics, STEM, data science, and modeling to forge collaborative efforts in teacher education

At any time, please feel free to reach out to me directly via email as well as communicating with any of our phenomenal leaders and board members throughout AMTE.

Together, Forward!

Farshid Safi, AMTE Pres
