ESTEEM Program Updates

AMTE is a part of the networked improvement community of the ESTEEM Project, which seeks to transform undergraduate teacher preparation so that future teachers are prepared to effectively teach modern data science and statistics. The Project has several important updates to share:

  • ESTEEM Summit Recap: More than 80 higher education faculty took part in the ESTEEM Summit in July 2025 in Raleigh, NC, which included participation from AMTE President Farshid Safi. Participants learned about national efforts to modernize middle and high school curriculum, various statistics and data science standards and curricula efforts across the U.S., and examples of how some institutions are already making changes to courses and programs to integrate more preparation to teach statistics and data science for future mathematics teachers. Participants left with concrete goals for making changes at their own institution or organization. Find out more about the event from this news release.
  • Two Revised ESTEEM Curriculum Module Sets Released: The ESTEEM team released revised two ESTEEM curriculum module sets for use with preservice mathematics teachers. The newly revised Foundations in Data Science and Statistics Teaching supports prospective teachers in building expertise about how students learn data and statistics and how to teach it effectively. The Teaching Statistical Association module set focuses on approaches for analyzing data for association and how students learn association with categorical and quantitative variables. Both sets include two modules with brief readings and multi-media engagements, data investigations using CODAP, classroom videos and student work, and opportunities to discuss, reflect and apply. Visit Canvas Commons for Access to this Curriculum
  • Fall Webinars: ESTEEM II will host three webinars this fall for mathematics teacher educators who would like to learn more about preparing teachers for data science and statistics:
