AMTEA (Alabama)

AMTE Alabama had our spring meeting on May 28, 2019. We had 22 total in attendance for our meeting, including AMTE's President, Michael Steele who called in and was able to give our newcomers an overview of AMTE. We also had a few attendees who called in virtually. As the new president, one of my most important goals was to increase membership. Well, I am happy to say that half of our attendees had never heard about AMTE or AMTEA. So, this was a big meeting for us!

AMTEC (Connnecticut)

The Connecticut affiliate held a successful meeting in March 2019. We tried a new format at this meeting, where members volunteered to bring a lesson or task they used in their preservice teacher courses and share it with other members. We had 12 people volunteer to share materials! We did 3 rounds of breakout groups, where those not sharing resources chose one of the four sets of materials to learn more about. Members found this format very engaging as well as generative. Materials were then shared in a googledrive folder so that others could adapt the ideas to their own courses.

We also brought on new board members at the conclusion of our March meeting. We are thrilled that Leah Frazee and Jillian Cavanna have joined the leadership team.

This fall we continued the constructive collaboration experienced at our spring meeting. Our conference was held on October 19, 2019, and was guided by the theme “Connecting and Collaborating to Enhance Practice.”

MI-AMTE (Michigan)

MI-AMTE 2020 Annual Conference, Conversations Among Colleagues, will be held at the University of Michigan. There will be pre-conference activities on Friday, March 20, 2020, and the All-day conference will be on Saturday, March 21, 2020.

Conversations among Colleagues was designed in 2003-2004 to facilitate conversations between and among mathematicians, mathematics educators and leaders in mathematics education. The day-long meeting consists of talks and conversations related to mathematics education and the preparation and continuing professional development of teachers of mathematics Pre K-College.

MAMTE (Missisippi)

MAMTE held their annual Symposium May 20-21, 2019 at William Carey University in Hattiesburg, MS. The symposium included sessions on equity in math education, CAEP common math addendum, teaching to the standards not the test, APLU - MTEP teacher recruitment, resource sharing, and updates from IHL and MDE. New task force initiatives and new officers were also voted on. MAMTE held a Business Meeting during the first session of MCTM on November 9, 2019 at William Carey University.

UAMTE (Utah)

This fall, UAMTE provided feedback on a new state board rule currently under review that regards pathways to elementary and secondary teacher endorsements. We are currently discussing the possibility of drafting a statement to present to the Utah System of Higher Education regarding the necessity of face-to-face teacher preparation courses (e.g., Math for Elementary Teachers), as there is administrative pressure coming from various state institutions to create online courses.
