 “Math Teacher Educator Short Course: Implementing TI Handheld Technology Focused at the High School Level

Duck, North Carolina

June 16 – June 19, 2003

 

Implementing Hand-held Technology in the Teacher Education Curriculum:

The short course is designed for mathematics teacher educators involved in the both content and methods courses for pre-service secondary mathematics teachers. We will investigate materials and activities for the mathematics teacher educator interested in integrating handheld technology in the pre-service teacher educator program. The course consists of a series of modules designed to help college faculty implement technology enhanced lessons in their courses as well as presenting some concepts within a module in a developmental sequence. The current modules are: Number Relations, Dynamic Geometry, Algebra, Probability/Statistics/Data Analysis, and Calculator Apps. The Texas Instruments TI-83 Plus SE, TI-Voyage 200, CBL 2™, and CBR will be integrated into the teaching activities. The scheduled instructor is Debbie Crocker from Appalachian State University.

 

The course is a cooperative effort between the T3 ·Teachers Teaching with Technology College Short Course Program <www.math.ohio-state.edu/shortcourse/> and Texas Instruments Inc. <education.ti.com>. Each of the first 25 participants will receive a free TI-83 Plus SE VS unit and a CBL2.

Location:

The Institute will be held on the Outer Banks of North Carolina near the village of Duck at the Army Field Research Facility (FRF) <http://www.frf.usace.army.mil/>.

 

Lodging:

Rental homes will be available for participants. If attending as an individual, you will share a home with other participants of the same gender – one person to a bedroom. The average 2002 cost per participant was $245 for the week. Vacationing families may choose to rent an entire house. Hotels usually start around $100 per night. Details will be sent upon request. Funding is available for housing grants of $200 each for the first 25 participants – payable as reimbursements.

 

Transportation:

If arriving by plane, use the Norfolk International Airport. It is suggested that you rent a car for the 1˝ hour trip to the Duck/Kitty Hawk area. Maps to the Outer Banks can be found on the web.

 

Social Events:

You will enjoy Monday evening dinner on board the Crystal Dawn head-boat as it cruises the Albemarle Sound. The outdoor drama “The Lost Colony” on Wednesday night is optional and is dependent on the weather. Families are welcome at both events for an additional per person cost.

 

Cancellation Policy:

The Math Teacher Educator Short Course will be held only if a minimum enrollment is reached by May 1, 2003. If minimum enrollment is not met, the Short Course will be cancelled and registration fees will be returned. The T3 CSC Program takes no responsibility for any other expenses incurred.

 

Tentative Schedule:

Monday, 12:30 – 4:30, FRF classroom. Dinner while taking a cruise of the Albemarle Sound.

Tuesday, 8:30 am - 12:00 PM, FRF classroom. 1:00 – 4:30, FRF field activities.

Wednesday, 8:30 – 4:30, FRF classroom, 8:00 PM “The Lost Colony” outdoor drama (not covered in registration fee)

Thursday, 8:30 – 12:00, FRF classroom.
