Mathematics Education Position

 

The Department of Mathematics & Statistics is seeking a tenure-line faculty at the assistant or associate level in mathematics education with a starting date of September 16, 2008. Applicants at the associate level must have a Ph.D. in mathematics education or mathematics with an established research record in mathematics education, must demonstrate excellence in teaching, and must provide evidence of successful funding support for their research or support for graduate students. Applicants at the junior level must have a doctoral degree in mathematics education with the equivalent of a masters in mathematics, must demonstrate excellence in teaching, and provide evidence of outstanding research potential.

 

The new hire will be joining an active Mathematics Education faculty within the Department of Mathematics & Statistics. Current projects include an NSF-funded Mathematics and Science Partnership institute K-12 professional development project, an NSF-funded IERI project investigating middle school mathematics problem solving, and research-based curriculum development in undergraduate abstract algebra.  Duties for this position include teaching mathematics and mathematics education courses, advising students, committee assignments, and directing Mathematics Education dissertations. In addition, successful candidates will be expected to develop or continue a strong research program in mathematics education that includes the procurement of external funding. The specific area of research interest is open.  Given current teaching needs, preference will be given to applicants with background and interest in the preparation and development of elementary and middle school mathematics teachers.

 

Mathematics Education Programs in the department include Mathematics content courses for Elementary Teachers; a BS/BA in Mathematics, Secondary Education Option; an undergraduate minor and a Graduate Certificate in Mathematics for Middle School Teachers; an MST/MAT in Mathematics; and the Ph.D. in Mathematics Education.
