Position: Tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor in Mathematics Education beginning August 2008.

Salary: Competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Requirements: A Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Mathematics Education or a Ph.D. in the Mathematical Sciences with strong research interests in Mathematics Education is required. Preference will be given to candidates who have research experience in mathematics or statistics education, K-12 teaching experience, demonstrated success in obtaining external funding, and who show promise of research interaction with current faculty.  The applicant must have the maturity and desire to do research and direct graduate students, have documented evidence of teaching excellence, and have a strong commitment to teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Native or near-native proficiency in English is required. An interview is necessary.

Responsibilities: Teaching, research and service to support the undergraduate and graduate programs in the Department of Mathematical Sciences. The teaching load will include courses ranging from introductory undergraduate courses to graduate courses. The successful candidate is expected to advise students and direct dissertations in the mathematics education programs in the Department of Mathematical Sciences and also work with pre-service and in-service mathematics teachers. In addition, successful candidates will be expected to develop a strong research program in mathematics education that includes potential external funding.

University: The University of Montana consists of a College of Arts and Sciences and seven professional schools. The student body consists of approximately 14,000 students, 80 percent of whom are undergraduates. Nearly 35 percent of the students are from out-of-state or from foreign countries.

Department: The Department of Mathematical Sciences has 21 tenured or tenure track faculty members. There are about 100 undergraduate mathematics majors, and 25 graduate students in masters and doctoral programs. Current departmental interests are in Algebra, Analysis, Applied Mathematics, Combinatorics & Optimization, Mathematics Education, and Statistics.

Location: The University of Montana is located in Missoula, a city in western Montana with a community of about 80,000 people. Missoula has often been singled out in national publications for its high quality of life. Set in a river valley in the Rocky Mountains at an elevation of 3200 feet, Missoula enjoys a moderate climate.
