Assistant /Associate Professor, Tenure-Track

Mathematics Education Position

 

 

 

Position

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is seeking a candidate for a tenure-track position in mathematics education at the Assistant/Associate Professor level. The appointment will begin in September 2007.

 

Qualifications

The position requires a doctoral degree in Mathematics Education or a doctoral degree and experience in Mathematics Education with preservice and/or inservice teachers; interest in and commitment to initial and continuing teacher education; potential for continuing scholarly contributions in Mathematics Education; interest in collaborating on program development, implementation, and evaluation; and willingness to support the professional development of practicing teachers of diverse backgrounds within a metropolitan area. Other attributes of interest are knowledge of and experience with the education of teachers at the preservice and master's level, the ability to lead and support adjunct instructors, and a background in the teaching of mathematics at the elementary or secondary levels. An appointment at the Associate Professor level requires a research record and a research review will be conducted. Applicants near completion of a doctorate may be considered for a position.

 

Department

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is located in the College of Arts , Sciences, and Letters. The department's 20 tenure-track members include pure and applied mathematicians, statisticians, and mathematics educators. In mathematics education there are four tenure-track faculty, one lecturer, and several adjuncts. The mathematics educators offer courses, advising, and services including undergraduate courses that lead to state certification at the elementary and secondary levels; an MA in Education with a specialty in middle grades mathematics; and a Center for Mathematics Education which provides master's level courses and professional development to practicing teachers throughout a multi-county area . The mathematics educators are committed to reaching out to practicing teachers throughout the metropolitan area to support the development of their robust understanding of mathematics and ways to make it accessible and meaningful to their students. The team is currently reconceptualizing the Mathematics for Elementary Teachers strand under NSF-funding to better address “mathematical knowledge for teaching.” This work involves participation in a study group for mathematics teacher educators as part of the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor's Center for Proficiency in Teaching Mathematics.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include teaching and advising undergraduate preservice teachers, masters students, and practicing teachers in both on-campus and off-campus settings (18 credit hours per year), seeking external funding for research and development of projects from competitive grant programs, collaborating with colleagues in developing and sustaining high quality programs at all levels, leading and supporting adjunct instructors in maintaining a consistent and responsive program of high quality in all implementations, and providing professional service at local, regional, and national levels.

 

Teaching/Research/Service

The University employs a Teacher-Scholar Model where teaching, research, and service are all valued. Excellence in teaching is required for tenure and promotion as is research capability demonstrated by publication in refereed journals. Incoming assistant or associate professors receive released time of three courses (nine credit hours) to be used during the first five years of the six-year probationary period to allow time for research. Untenured faculty can also compete for University of Michigan Rackham grants for summer support.
