Department of Mathematics, Science and Technology Education

 

NC State University, located in Raleigh, is a large Research Extensive land-grant institution, nationally recognized as a leader in science and technology. Our specialized department of 29 faculty members in the College of Education is seeking a talented and energetic tenure-track professor at the assistant professor level. The Department of Mathematics, Science and Technology Education currently includes five mathematics education faculty and two clinical instructors. We have the only Ph.D. program in Mathematics Education in NC, and the only state-funded Center for Research in Mathematics and Science Education. The mathematics education program has about 200 undergraduate students in our middle and secondary programs, and about 40 graduate students. Many faculty in our department are associated with the William and Ida Friday Institute for Educational Innovation, a state-of-the-art educational research facility on Centennial Campus, which serves as the hub of exciting efforts to build on advances in technology for education. This building is adjacent to Centennial Campus Middle School and includes a highly technological classroom equipped for collecting video and audio data for research. Qualifications: Successful applicants will have:

·     an earned doctorate in mathematics education, or a closely related field;

·     a strong preparation in mathematics;

·     interest and expertise at the middle, secondary, or tertiary level;

·     a promising research agenda in mathematics education

·     experience teaching in grades 5-12 and eligibility for NC teaching license in middle or high school.

Preferred applicants will have:

·     experience with pre-service or in-service teachers;

·     a record of obtaining or experience working with externally funded projects;

·     a record of outreach and professional service to the field of mathematics education; and

·     expertise with the use of technology in teaching mathematics.

 

Responsibilities:  Faculty in mathematics education are expected to:

·     conduct a focused program of research and scholarship in mathematics education that includes the pursuit of relevant externally funded opportunities;

·     teach and advise undergraduate and graduate mathematics education students and supervise clinical field experiences;

·     participate in faculty governance and evaluation and renewal of programs; and

·     provide service to the department, college, university, profession, and community.

 

Review of candidates begins November 15, 2006 and will continue until filled. Position begins August 2007.
